Before the invention of photography in the 1800s portrait miniatures were popular, primarily in Europe, as a gift for the aristocratic set to bestow upon others. They were used as a show of diplomatic favor, as a gift during courtship, or as an intimate token to a loved one. Early portrait miniatures were painted in watercolor, and later were painted primarily in enamel. Some were as small as 1 inch in diameter.

I’ve used a reproduction of an antique portrait miniature painting to create this wearable art button, adorned with a deep red faceted jade bead drop.

Button measures 1 ¼” (3.2 cm), with standard pinback button backing (see last image.) Total height with the red jade bead drop is approximately 1 ¾” (4.4 cm.)
