I use Spanish Cedar wood (Cedrella Odorata), a tree native to central and south America but today also harvested from commercial plantations in western Africa (Ghana and Ivory Coast). The wood has a brownish pink color that darkens over time. It is used for cigar boxes, windows, doors, exterior moldings, closet linings and building boats. It is classified as a hardwood from the Mahogany family but is softer and lighter. Spanish Cedar is an aromatic wood with natural oils that produce a distinctive pleasant aroma that also acts as a natural insect and moth repellent. I selected this exotic wood for its color, straight grain, absence of knots and workability, and also because I have worked with this wood before and know how it endures over time.

Danish Oil - this is a wet finish that soaks into the wood pores to seal the surface before drying. It is a mixture of oils (linseed oil and/or Tung oil) plus varnish and unlike mineral oils it dries within hours. It provides a very natural low gloss slightly darker finish that highlights the wood grain and protects the wood from spills and stains. Over time the wood will become darker from exposure to light. This finish was developed for early Scandinavian furniture made for export and has a very natural hand-rubbed look and is not glossy. Over time the napkin ring wood will become smoother and develop a slight gloss from daily buffing against the napkin and tablecloth. The wood gloss can be enhanced over time by applying furniture polish but this is optional.’

Unfinished/Sanded - the unfinished wood is sanded until smooth and does not receive any additional finishes. The raw wood will give off the distinctive aroma of Spanish Cedar wood. The unfinished wood will not be protected from spills and stains. Over time with handling and exposure to light the wood will become darker and smoother. You can also choose to apply your own DIY stains and finishes. This is a good option if you want a very natural wood product without any finish.

I made the first sample of this napkin ring decades ago while still in elementary school and taking my first steps in woodworking and making things. A picture of the original napkin ring is included in my listing pictures. The mid century vibe of this piece is a result of living in the 1970s with mostly MCM furniture and articles at home. This new edition of the same napkin ring is the original design that has worked so well for many years. The oval shape uses thicker walls on the two ends for strength and makes it easier to hold the ring. The diameter at each end of the oval is slightly different for a unique look and follows the original shape. I made the first original version of this napkin ring using basic woodworking tools such as chisel, mallet and rasp. When used on a daily basis the wood surface finish will become smoother from contact with the napkin and tablecloth.

Each napkin ring is a handmade work of art made from scratch in my Colorado workshop using Spanish Cedar wood. The rough shape is cut on the CNC followed by multiple sanding and finishing steps to reach a beautiful smooth finish. Several coats of Danish oil are applied by hand over a period of several days followed by buffing. The oval shape of this napkin ring is more challenging to make but the end result is distinctively beautiful and functional.
