Alabaster is named after a city called Alabaster, in Egypt, which is also one of the sources of alabaster. Alabaster is a term used to refer to two forms of calcium (gypsum). Both are characterized by a creamy to snow-white color and, due to their low hardness (2 on the Mohs scale), alabaster has been used for centuries in carving, ornamentation and decorative sculpture. Numerous examples of carved alabaster can be found in museums and venerable buildings around the world. Ancient peoples preferred calcite alabaster, a very hard form of calcium carbonate. This stone was originally imported from Egypt, a country that has also created a number of works of art with this mineral. It is often found in caves as a deposited mineral in the form of stalagmites. Modern alabaster is usually gypsum alabaster or calcium sulfate. Gypsum is much softer than calcite and is common in England, where seawater deposits slowly evaporated over the centuries. However, the ancient peoples knew and used both forms. While white is the classic color associated with alabaster, the mineral can also come in other colors, such as light brown or reddish, and can be veined with color. It is often slightly translucent and some sculptors work the stone to bring out this natural translucency, giving it a kind of shine. Thinly cut alabaster has also been used to make windows and transparent artifacts. Examples of work dating back thousands of years have been found in cultures around the world, indicating the mineral's widespread popularity.

Spiritually speaking, alabaster is a "drawing stone," meaning it has the ability to pull things toward you or push things away from you, depending on what your needs are. It works great to use to draw things, for example sigils (signs) or other symbols, that you feel spiritually connected with. Alabaster is useful in finding your spiritual path, as well as in making some spells. It is useful when consulting with spirit guides and also used in automatic writing.
