Jasper is a variety of opaque chalcedony, a microcrystalline variety of quartz. It is a silica-based stone with conchoidal or "shell-like" fracture (like how glass breaks) and a hardness of 7, which cannot be scratched with a steel pocket knife, much like quartz. It has a high quartz content, the crystals in the material are crypto or microcrystalline quartz, so you can't see them, but they are. Jasper is not a scientific term. When labeling the correct jasper, scientists will refer to the sample as "cryptocrystalline quartz or microcrystalline quartz: variety jasper." What we call "jasper" is usually a stone called a "jasperoid". About 20% of the stones that we call "jasper" are often the marketing names and do not have a high silica content or they are not opaque, both things used to determine if something should be called "jasper". The appeal of Jasper is its interesting color patterns and formations. While it can be a solid color, it is usually mottled, mottled, ringed, or striped. Each jasper has a unique color or pattern, which gives this stone a lot of variation. Jasper is an ancient gemstone and is mentioned in the Bible and other classical sources. Although it is quite common and affordable today, jasper was considered a valuable stone in ancient times.

Maligano jasper is a specific type of jasper found in Indonesia and formed in ancient volcanic hot springs. Maligano jasper is named after a small village in Sulawesi, Indonesia in Southeast Asia. It was found less than 10 years ago and can thus be considered a recent new find.
