Student Workbook

A 75-page document for anyone studying the second half of Caesar's Gallic Wars using Henle Third Year Latin. Tailored to the Classical Conversations Challenge III First Semester Grammar Strand in 15 weeks.
This workbook includes my “good” English translation of Caesar's account for reading aloud in class together broken into weekly sections that correspond to Henle Second Year Latin assignments. Paragraphs are titled to correspond to Henle.
This workbook also includes Focused Latin Assignments to highlight one paragraph a week in Caesar's Latin account. These Latin assignments are laid out on a workbook-style page, so students have space to work through the assigned translation lines. References to the corresponding page in the Henle III Answer Key are included for easy reference. A chart clearly breaks down all the paragraph options for further translation assignments.
Several readings from Henle's" Jesus Christ, King of Kings" are also included.
Also included: Most Frequently Used Word List, a Brief History of Rome up to the Rise of Caesar, Caesar's "Gallic War" Timeline, and Gallic background information and map.

Discussion Questions

This document includes 198 pages of detailed instructions and discussion questions for anyone teaching through Caesar’s Gallic Wars using Henle Second Year Latin. Tailored to the Classical Conversations Challenge III First Semester Grammar Strand in 15 weeks.
These discussion questions walk through the companion book, “Caesar Part Two Student Workbook,” which includes my “good” English translation of Caesar’s account.
(Directors will need to also purchase the Caesar Part Two Student Workbook in order to effectively use these discussion questions. I recommend printing and binding a copy of the Caesar Part Two Student Workbook for each student to bring to class every week.) Read the English aloud in class together and then use the discussion questions in the following lesson plans to guide your classroom conversation. Other highlights of these discussion questions include:
• Exordium ideas and related questions to draw student in. These exordiums often allow for integration with other Challenge III strands especially Shakespeare and American History. And some of them are just plain fun. :) (Exordia visuals are also available to enhance the discussion.)
• Lots of questions to choose from. Questions are underlined and possible answers are given in italics. These help students both comprehend what is happening in this account and evaluate the choices and consequences of various leaders. Even if you have a class of non-Latin students, these discussion questions will help you to glean the most from Caesar's accounts in an engaging and meaningful way. These lesson plans offer too many questions to ask in an hour, so pick and choose the ones you want your students to focus on. (Maps and landscape photos are referenced to engage students’ interest.)
• Focused Latin Assignments to highlight key passages in Caesar’s account. Assignments of 5-18 lines are chosen to allow you to dig into the Latin of one of the many Latin passages assigned each week. This document includes a complete parsing of every word in the Focused Latin Assignment for the week. Discussion Questions about the passage also help students to identify key components of the passage. (Directors are given options about how to best use this section for the benefit of their particular students.)
• A “gentle” Grammar Review. This section prepares students to recognize and understand various verb forms and constructions they will encounter in the Latin translations. Examples are drawn from Caesar’s account as well as from Shakespeare. Directors can choose whether or not to include this review depending on their class size, interest, and skill. (Grammar visuals are also available to enhance the discussion.)
• Notes on Roman history to understand the significance of the Gallic Wars. These lesson plans pull rich information from Henle II and other resources all in one place as you work through Caesar’s accounts. These are intended to engage student interest and save the director time during class.

This document includes 95 pages of handouts and visuals for anyone teaching through Caesar’s Gallic Wars using Henle Second Year Latin using the "Caesar Part Two Discussion Questions" available at Socratic Teaching. Tailored to the Classical Conversations Challenge III First Semester Grammar Strand in 15 weeks.
Each week of the "Caesar Part Two Discussion Questions" starts with an exordium that welcomes students into the lesson and connects the material with another subject with related questions to draw students in. These exordiums often allow for integration with other Challenge III strands especially with Shakespeare and American History. And some of them are just plain fun. :)  This document also includes visuals to illustrate the grammar concepts covered in the grammar section as well as maps and photos of the terrain to understand Caesar’s troop movements.
This document conveniently gathers all that is needed to either print handouts and pictures or display pictures on a computer or tablet screen. This cuts down on teacher prep work!
