Obsidian consists of silicon dioxide (silica) that forms rock. Obsidian is not crystalline and therefore not a mineral. Obsidian is formed when lava from a volcanic eruption solidifies so quickly that there is no time for mineral crystals to grow in it. It is sometimes called "volcanic glass" because of its glass-like texture. Obsidian is typically jet black, but the inclusion of several minerals can create opaque colored varieties, such as the mahogany or snowflake obsidian. Rarer forms of obsidian, such as the gold and silver obsidian, have a colorful sheen that appears when moved in the light. This effect is usually created by small inclusions of undulating vapor bubbles trapped in the glass. These bubbles are stretched almost flat in a series of layers that reflect the light with a metallic glow. Rainbow obsidian has an iridescent rainbow effect along with the sheen of a black obsidian, but the colors actually come from nanoparticles of magnetite. The different colors are believed to result from different cooling rates of the molten lava.

Velvet obsidian, also called peacock obsidian, velvet luster obsidian, velvet obsidian or silk obsidian, is a very similar variety of obsidian. Velvet obsidian tends to rainbow obsidian, except the colors are formed in faint patterns, which look like rainbow layers of velvet in the crystal, rather than the bands of rainbow obsidian. When the stone is moved under the light, you get the feeling of movement in the stone as the light plays in and out of these lighter and darker areas of color. These specimens were found in Mexico.
