The time taken for perennial seeds to germinate varies from species to species. Some take a few weeks or months while others need up to 2 years. Not all seeds germinate at the same time and most species DO NOT have a 100% germination rate. Some species need to be chilled, scarified or soaked in water in order to germinate. This applies to several species of vines, trees, shrubs, tropicals and large seeds.

COLD STRATIFY ALL PERENNIALS, SHRUB & TREE SEEDS for at least 30 days unless the plant specific instructions indicate a longer period of stratification. Read BOTH the Plant specific instructions on the listings AND the Seed Guide.

If you are unsure of the best way to germinate the seeds, pls DO NOT SOW ALL THE SEEDS. Keep some in case the germination method you use doesn’t work.

Some of the seeds we offer are more tailored to experienced gardeners. If you are new to gardening, you might want to start with annuals such as Petunias or Snapdragons.
If there are any problems, please contact us first BEFORE leaving feedback.

DESCRIPTION:

Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (AGM)

Platycodon grandiflorus 'Mariesii’, commonly known as the Balloon Flower, is a delightful perennial plant that belongs to the family Campanulaceae. Native to East Asia, particularly China, Korea, and Japan, this ornamental flower has gained popularity worldwide for its unique balloon-like buds that open into stunning star-shaped blooms.

The Balloon Flower is named for its balloon-shaped buds, which resemble inflated balloons before they open. These buds are a vibrant shade of violet-blue. Once the buds burst open, they reveal five beautifully sculpted petals arranged in the shape of a star. The flower's delicate appearance and elegant shape make it an enchanting addition to any garden or floral arrangement.

This plant is known for its hardiness, making it suitable for various climates and growing conditions. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and can tolerate a wide range of soil types, including loamy, sandy, and clay soils. Balloon Flowers have a moderate growth rate, reaching a height of about 1 ½ ft (50 cm) and spreading about the same width. Their compact size and neat habit make them ideal for borders, rock gardens, or container plantings.

Caring for Platycodon grandiflorus 'Mariesii' is relatively straightforward. Regular watering is necessary, particularly during dry spells, to maintain consistent soil moisture. However, it's important to avoid overwatering, as excessive moisture can lead to root rot. Applying a layer of mulch around the base of the plant helps retain moisture and suppresses weed growth.

This perennial is generally low-maintenance but may benefit from deadheading spent blooms to promote continuous flowering. In colder climates, the plant dies back in winter, and it is recommended to cut back the withered foliage in early spring to allow for new growth.

Overall, the Balloon Flower is a charming and resilient plant that brings a touch of whimsy and elegance to any garden. Its distinctive balloon-shaped buds and star-like blooms, coupled with its adaptability and ease of care, make it a popular choice among gardeners and flower enthusiasts alike.
