In this listing we are very pleased to offer a stunningly shaped and colored mid century glass pendant light.
In very pretty green color that can best be described as emerald.
The shade has a wonderful hooped design with a wider, donut shaped, bottom part and three identical flatter tiers in the top part. Counting the transition layers, the shade has a many as eight levels/layers/tiers.
The design is typical mid century and reminiscent of for example some of the glass designs at Swedish glass workshops Alsterfors (designs by Per Olof Ström), Lindshammer & Ryd Glasbruk at the time.
We have never seen this lamp model before as a pendant light. Thanks to the site “vintageinfobe” we did come across a table lamp version of the same model and color (although perhaps of a smaller size) and that particular table lamp was marked “ES Moderne Leuchten” of Germany.
That does not necessarily help to identify the maker as ES Moderne Leuchten seems to have been a post-WWII division of what was originally a metal goods manufacturer from Berlin, called Emmerich & Schöning. Very little is known about that company. As this lamp is all glass it will not have been made by the company itself. Its German origin does make it likely the glass was mouth blown in one of the Eastern European countries at the time, for example in the Bohemia region in what is now the Czech Republic.
The shade is made of cased multilayer glass ("incamiciato" in Italian) in four layers. First is a thin transparent inner later, then a white inner layer, followed by a green middle layer (that gives the lamps its color) and finally a thick transparent outer layer.
The glass layers combined reach 6 millimeters / 0.24 inches at the bottom rim which is way above average making for a solid and also weighty pendant light.
The entire suspension system is a new replacement by us. It is made of an aluminum bulb holder with a metal glass shade support above it that blocks inside the top of the shade. On top is a black coated metal disc that covers the opening on top with a long equally black coated pull relief on top that doubles as a finial.
The also brand new lamp cord is a cloth covered black one that matches the color of the disc and finial. Of course it always possible to change the lamp cord to a plain white plastic one or any other cloth covered colored version if so desired.
The lamp takes 1 E27 bulb with screw type fitting.
The new black lamp cord measures 201 centimeters / 79.13 inches.
The lamp cord is open ended at the ceiling end, ready for hard wiring.
There is no ceiling canopy but one can be provided free of charge on request. Just let us know when you order this lamp.
Measurements (shade only):
Height: 27 cm / 10.63 inches
Height of the black finial: 7 cm / 2.75 inches
Diameter of the shade at its widest point: ca 28.55 cm / ca 11.24 inches
Inner diameter at the bottom opening rim: 14.8 cm / 5.83 inches
Thickness of the glass at the top rim: 0.6 cm / 0.24 inches
Length of the lamp cord: 201 cm / 79.13 inches
Weight: 2260 grams.
Condition:
Very good to excellent condition.
Please note that in some pictures the glass may have been retouched to hide distracting reflections.
In reality the glass is shiny and clean all around.
This certainly rare lamp has a number of minor traces that are especially of production.
This was obviously commercial lamp glass, not art glass.
The bottom rim of this lamp has a few minor issues that we believe to be all from production. The outer rim has two felt pen point size chips off next to each other but is otherwise trace free. The inner rim has a few areas where the glass is cut off under a sloped rather than straight angle with also some chipping in it. It is is not at all as dramatic as it may read and based on our experience we are quite convinced these “imperfections” are all from production.
The upper rim of the shade is in excellent condition with only minor traces but whatever there is: it is fully covered by the black disc on top.
The outside of the shade has a mix of visible traces.
Firstly there are air bubbles from production inside the glass that can be found all over the lamp. Apart from perhaps one or two exceptions, they are all needle to pen point size. Some of them appear as imploded bubbles at the surface. In short: they can be seen but do not distract.
Next there is a patch of about 14 x 10 millimeters / 0.55 x 0.39 inches towards the bottom where there seem to be many dots or air bubbles grouped together. This looks like an impact point in the glass BUT this patch cannot be felt on the outside hence it is inside the glass layers, indicating this is from production too. However this patch is certainly visible.
The lamp shade has a number of short scratches and pen point scuffs in the glass but none of these stands out in daily enjoyment.
As stated the bulb holder, shade support, disc and pull relief on top and the lamp cord are all new replacements by us.
