Who was Cicero?

Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 BCE) was a Roman statesman, orator, and philosopher known for his significant contributions to Roman rhetoric and politics. Born in Arpinum, Italy, Cicero emerged from a wealthy municipal family and was extensively educated in Rome and Greece. His career in law and politics was distinguished by his exceptional oratory skills, which made him one of Rome's leading advocates.

Cicero served as consul in 63 BCE, where he famously exposed the Catiline Conspiracy, aiming to safeguard the Republic from internal threats. Despite his efforts to uphold republican ideals, Cicero found himself navigating the turbulent politics of the era, marked by the rise of figures like Julius Caesar and the ensuing civil conflicts.

A prolific writer, Cicero's works on philosophy, politics, and ethics, such as "De Republica" and "De Officiis", have left a lasting impact on Western thought, blending Greek philosophical teachings with Roman cultural values. His correspondence also provides a detailed account of the political life of his time.

Cicero's opposition to Mark Antony after Julius Caesar's assassination led to his eventual downfall. He was declared an enemy of the state by the Second Triumvirate and was executed in 43 BCE. Despite his tragic end, Cicero's legacy as a defender of the Republic and his contributions to literature and philosophy endure.

What better way to capture the essence of ancient Rome than to keep a bust of Cicero on your bookshelf, table, or anywhere in your home.
