Highlights

  • Handpicked by TheCrimsonParlour
  • Vintage from the 19th century
  • Materials: Dried flowers, glass, leather, metal, velvet

Lovely pressed flowers are displayed between glass in a large "half plate" size gold frame, while also housed in a large, in-tact, two piece riveted leather case with interior brown velvet and a push button closure. It wasn't uncommon for Victorians to preserve flower arrangements from loved ones or special occasions, including weddings & funerals. This is a truly unique piece (I have only seen one other like it, but much smaller & without the markings).

Closed: 4.75" x 6"

Markings: (left bottom corner)
C.D. Fredricks
585 Broadway

History:
Charles DeForest Fredricks (C.D. Fredricks) was a well-known photographer & case-maker that made his name in New York during the mid & late-1800s. In 1854/55 he opened, "Fredricks' Photographic Temple of Art" on 585 & 587 Broadway which would become one of the most successful photography studios in the area. It often attracted crowds of spectators, all flocking to see the extravagant sixty-foot arched sign made from hundreds of brilliantly colored lanterns. Fredrick’s “Temple” had a very high reputation for producing quality work & by some accounts was deemed the most popular photography studio in New York.
(The studio & a portrait of Fredricks are shown in the last 2 photos, from Wikipedia).

Condition:
The case is a bit scuffed (see video) but closes securely shut. There are some cracking to the corners of the case, especially to the top right corners (when folded). Overall the velvet and case are in great condition for their age!

* Many of these pieces are over 100 years old, so signs of wear are inevitable & add to their unique antique beauty. Please request any additional photos or inquiries if desired.
