1895 Ladies Robe de Voyage (Traveling Jacket) – Reproduction PDF Sewing Pattern #0177 (32" Bust)

Elegant and dramatic, this Robe de Voyage—also known as a traveling jacket—captures the high fashion of the late Victorian / Belle Époque era. Designed for women on the move, this jacket combines tailored structure with sweeping movement, making it both practical and visually striking.

Originally published in La Mode Illustrée on May 5, 1895, the jacket features very full pleated leg-o’-mutton sleeves, long narrow cuffs, and a high standing collar—all hallmarks of mid-1890s fashion. The front trim is decorative, as the jacket actually secures invisibly at center front beneath the trim, creating a smooth, uninterrupted exterior.

The front opening ends at the waist, allowing the skirted hem to wing open dramatically. The lower portion flares into a wide, sweeping silhouette, giving the jacket its distinctive movement and presence. While stunning in solid fabrics, the design is especially effective in stripes, which emphasize the dramatic cut; one original version omitted the front trim entirely, proving the silhouette is strong enough to stand on its own.

This is a faithful reproduction of an original 1895 pattern, intended for experienced sewists, historical costumers, and those seeking authentic Belle Époque outerwear.

SUGGESTED MATERIALS: Linen, Light woolens, Silk, Broadcloth, Pique.

⚠️ Important Notes on Victorian-Era Patterns
Patterns from the 1890s were published with the expectation that the home dressmaker already possessed solid garment-construction skills. As a result:
• Instructions may be minimal or unillustrated
• Some construction details (facings, trims, finishes) may be implied rather than explained
• Patterns were drafted to be worn over period-appropriate undergarments
• Fit is tighter than modern jackets, especially through the armholes and waist
👉 A muslin mock-up is strongly recommended before cutting into fashion fabric to ensure proper fit and comfort while maintaining historical accuracy.

⚠️This pattern is reproduced directly from the original source material, with no modern alterations, to preserve its Victorian authenticity. Prior sewing experience and familiarity with historical patterns is recommended.

🌼 Please Keep in Mind
This is an exact reproduction of the original vintage pattern and may include authentic quirks or small formatting inconsistencies typical of period drafting. While I have sewn many patterns in my collection, not every pattern has been individually test-stitched. A muslin/toile is always recommended to ensure proper fit before cutting into your final fabric.
