This is a PDF sewing pattern for the Morston Quay Messenger Bag. This modern, classically styled unisex messenger bag is inspired by the simple and practical shapes of the wartime ‘old kit bags’. This design features an angular shaped flap and pocket, and can be made with a decorative button trimmed tab on the flap. Morston Quay Messenger is a useful everyday accessory with retro appeal that can be made with a self-fabric strap or with a purchased strap with self-fabric tabs. The template for the front pocket doubles as an interior pocket.

The bag’s finished dimensions are: Height 14” (35cm), Width 12” (31cm), Base width 2” (5cm)

This PDF has 16 pages—9 pages including the cover, general, cutting out and step-by-step instructions, and 7 pattern sheets with the templates, which you must print and cut out. All of the templates are actual size. As the main templates are too big to fit on one sheet, you must cut out and tape these templates together where shown. Instructions for this are clear.

Materials needed:

To make whole bag in one fabric, you will need:
2/3 yard (60cm) of 60” (154cm) wide, or 1 yard (95cm) of 44” (112cm) wide exterior fabric

To make with a contrast pocket and strap, you will need:
½ yard (45cm) of 60” (154cm) wide, or ¾ yard (65cm) of 44” (112cm) wide main exterior fabric
1/3 yard (30cm) of 60” (154cm), or ½ yard (45cm) of 44” (112cm) wide contrast fabric

To make with a purchased strap, you will need:
2/3 yard (65cm) of 60” (154cm) wide, or ¾ yard (70cm) of 44” (112cm) wide exterior fabric

For all combinations, you will need:
2/3 yard (65cm) of 44” (112cm) wide lining fabric
½ yard (50cm) of 44” (112cm) wide firm sew-in craft weight interfacing
2/3 yard (65cm) of 36” (92cm) wide fusible interfacing
40” x 5” (105cm x 14cm) of fusible web
1 magnetic snap
3 buttons (approx. 1”/25mm diameter) or 2 larger buttons

For purchased handle:
Long leather or vinyl strap ¾” (2cm) wide and approx. 36” (92cm) long
Piece of fusible web approx. 4” x 4” (10 x 10cm) for tabs

You will also need:
Sticky tape (to join pattern templates)
Sewing machine
Pins
Scissors
Fabric marker pen, pencil or chalk
Thread to match fabric

I am fairly new to sewing, and this is the first time I've tried making something like this. The pattern printed out beautifully and didn't require re-sizing for my printer. The instructions were easy to follow, and had lots of helpful detail regarding fabric options, etc. Very pleased with this, and how it turned out.
