Rhode Island is the smallest state in the U.S., as well as one of the flattest, but has the second highest population density of any state. It is one of the six New England states and was the last of the thirteen colonies. Befitting it's name, the "Ocean State", Rhode Island's coastal beaches make it a wonderful summer vacation destination. Although most of the state is on the mainland, the actual island of Rhode Island (now better known as Aquidneck Island) was the first area to be originally settled. Many people now know Aquidneck for the posh Newport area at it's southernmost tip. Rhode Island's state flower is the violet, its state tree the Red Maple and its state bird is the Rhode Island red hen. So if you visit "The Breakers" while in Newport, watch fire float down the river at the popular WaterFire in Providence, or stop by the Narragansett Brewing Company for a beer, you must be in Rhode Island.
