Today many think that Civil War women didn't wear cosmetics, and while that belief is highly regarded as fact, in truth, when you look at cosmetics use thought history, the 1850-1860s was more focused on a natural look, but that doesn't mean cosmetics didn't exist. It was a personal preference as to wear them or not. The primary use of cosmetics at that time were to clean and shield the skin, giving it a natural healthy glow. Natural rouges, that gave just a hint of blush, were also worn. Cucumber and Neroli products were very popular at this time. This authentic 1857 recipe uses both Cucumber and Neroli, giving it a lovely fresh scent and making it a cherished recipe during the Civil War.

Cold Creams have been used throughout history to soften the skin and keep it clean. The term "Cold" came from the feeling it left on your skin when applied. From the 18th century to the Regency period- cosmetics changed drastically, and yet in a few ways they didn't change very much at all. There was a continued push towards natural products and a very natural look.
Cosmetic manufacturers focused their attention on younger women in the hopes of getting them hooked on skin creams and face powders. Early in the 19th century was the first time in history that the term "Cosmetics" actually separated into its own category. PLEASE NOTE: In the warmer months- all of our creams may change consistency- they only need to be put back in the fridge and given a stir. We follow the original recipe, so unlike modern creams- ours may become soupy or even separate... This is normal and will not affect the efficacy of the product. Just cool them down and give them a stir.
