My Modern Icon: White Wolf, Angel of the Desert is a painting whose source was a waking vision. I started this painting many months ago and put it away as it just would not resolve itself. After moving back to Santa Fe I decided to paint over it as it is nice canvas already stretched on heavy stretcher bars and move on to do some other image. After months of ignoring the whole idea, I realized I had no urge to paint, a truly horrible state of being for an artist, and the painting of the wolf with wings clawed at the back of my mind. So much so, that finishing this White Wolf became paramount if I was to ever paint again. Some paintings just will not let go and they must be resolved, for they exist at a point of intersection and direct an artist to a new path.
The Prickly Pear Cactus was blooming in Santa Fe at the time of my resolution to finish the Wolf, so I took a photograph of one while out on a hike and added it to the composition. It was the right thing to do as it brought the image into focus for me, the painting was not just about the Wolf, it was also about the desert. The black background reminded me of hiking at night in the desert when the sky was pitch black, I had to turn back after a very short walk, as there was so little natural light that I could not see my hand in front of me. The white of the wolf similar to a full moon's light as it reflected ghostlike off rocks and plants.
Art, especially images that come spontaneously like White Wolf, have a life of their own.

Wolves are my favorite animals. They are necessary. Predators in nature play a vital role in keeping the balance and interplay between species healthy. My Wolf art reflects my deep passion for Animal Rights. White Wolf, Angel of the Desert is a being that is Splendid, Terrible and Mighty and mirrors the awesome power that thrives in the vast stretches of the Southwest Desert. A great gift for a Wolf Lover.

The beauty of the wilderness in Northern New Mexico is altering, but while I wander through its sands and rocks and hills and arroyos I am always, and well that I should be, aware that within seconds the peace and beauty can transform into very difficult situations, if not downright dangerous ones. Like the Wolf, so beautiful, yet dangerous.

Print of my original painting on Wood and Masonite collage is @ 7.5x 6.5" and can be hung through the decorative hole on top, or simply placed wherever you wish for really different wall art and home decor.
