Every home has a dark corner that needs a bit of light. This small gourd lantern, hand crafted art from a real gourd, is just the thing to brighten it up! The circle design on this gourd lamp was drilled with a pattern of concentric circles and straight lines. The included cord and LED bulb shine through the holes when turned on, making a display of light on the walls of the room. This lantern with circles will add light where it's needed.

The gourd I chose for this design is called a cannonball gourd. Cannonballs are about 5-6 inches in diameter and almost perfectly round. I dye the gourd a shade of brown, to accentuate the gourd's natural markings and leave it a natural color. After drawing the design, I carve it into the gourd, which makes the pattern show up in a lighter color against the dark background. Then, using several sizes of drill bits, I drill evenly spaced holes. Just insert the included lamp cord and LED bulb and turn it on to see the design thrown onto the dark walls!

If the gourd has a flat bottom, no extra base is needed. However, most gourds don’t sit well. They’re either roly-poly in the bottom or have one hip that’s higher, so they rock. After years of trying different ways to stabilize he gourds, I found an unobtrusive black base that a lamp cord will fit into. Now, most of my lanterns use that base, included with your purchase.

Colored with gourd dye, medium brown, and sealed with Krylon.

Lamp cord and LED bulb included.

Why don’t you offer free shipping? — It’s true that I don’t offer free shipping on many of my items. We all know that “free” shipping isn’t really free. The maker simply raises the original price to include shipping costs. Many Etsy items will slide into a padded envelope or a “one price” box; and they can go anywhere within the US with no extra cost. My items, though, require a box larger than USPS offers, so that option isn’t available for my shop. And shipping 100 miles is a much different cost than shipping 2500 miles. I don’t want the customers who live close to have to bear the extra cost that would be built into a free shipping. I think it’s more fair to my customers to simply pay for shipping. I’m using the best and lowest option.

Why is my item not the size you estimated? — Every Gourd is different in size, being created by a creative God, not a plastic mold. In trying to find a gourd the right shape and thickness, I will fudge on the size just a bit, if necessary. I don’t have my own gourd farm. Nor do I have a large storage space for gourds waiting to become art. I try to keep a variety of gourds; but in the end, I must use what I have, if it’s close the the right size and shape. That’s the nature of natural materials.

Beautiful craftswomanship, beautiful light. I do wish the light were a little brighter but as long as the room is dark enough I can see the light scattering. Kay kindly discounted my shipping when I purchased two of these.
