Vintage 1960s custom made floral silk dress from the famed Bergdorf Goodman couture shop. Purple and blue rose print silk dupioni with a darted bust, seamed waist and wide, fitted waistband. Top gathered skirt with a straight fit through to the hem. Watteau style back with a single, ultra wide box pleat down the center back skirt. High level couture quality construction with a silk organza lining and interior grosgrain hooked waist band. Zipper up the back.

Bergdorf Goodman’s Couture Salon, originating from a custom tailor shop founded in 1901 by Edwin Goodman, was a premier American destination for bespoke fashion and high-end French replicas, operating at its peak from the 1930s through the 1960s. Located on the upper floors and directed by Ethel Frankau for over 50 years, the salon offered high-end custom clothing, French couture copies (from the likes of Dior, Balenciaga and Balmain), and in-house designs, serving elite clientele and Broadway stars. This particular dress was a design of Bernard Newman, one of their best known house designers and was made of a private client named Miss M. Smith in 1963.

Care - hand washed and ready to wear
Condition - excellent, just one tiny frayed spot at the front bodice that is not readily noticeable. Please see last photo.
