There are four images of the opening day of the American Revolution made by an American who went to the ground where it happened. Four. Amos Doolittle, a silversmith from New Haven, marched north when the news from Lexington arrived, visited the battlefield, talked to witnesses, and engraved what he learned. His four copper plates, published in December 1775, are the only contemporary visual record of April 19.

Every painting of Lexington Green you have seen in a textbook was made later, by someone who was not there. Doolittle went back.

This study pack puts museum-quality scans of all four plates in your hands, with a 20-page Educator Guide and student activity sheets designed for Charlotte Mason picture study, homeschool history units, and classroom primary source analysis.

The prints show their age. That is the point. These are 250-year-old copper-plate engravings on handmade paper. The brown spots (foxing), the yellowing, the faint plate marks are all evidence. Every mark tells you something about how this object survived 250 years. Your students are looking at the real thing.

Only a handful of original Doolittle sets survive. Christie's sold an incomplete set for $750,000 in 2022. These scans are the next best thing to standing in front of the originals.
