Vintage Burley Winter Pottery Vase Large Mottled Glaze Arts & Crafts Mission Style

Vintage Burley Winter Vase with an amazing shape and glaze reminiscent of a Mission style or Arts & Crafts piece. The 12” tall vase is not marked as to manufacturer but the glaze and majestic, distinctive form are characteristic. The mottled glaze, in shades of taupe, mauve, lavender, cocoa, and touches of light green, flows and drips and blends down the large, bold shape which is adorned with two small curled handles for contrast. The vase is about 7-1/4” across at the widest. It is incised with a shape number 6 on the bottom. The vase is made with typical Burley manufacturing flaws, such as an occasional glaze pit, little “clay bump”, and a glazed over chip on one lower side. The interesting crudeness is also indicative of this American art pottery company which began in Crooksville, Ohio in 1872, continuing until its heyday in the 1930s. The pottery is sturdy and solid, like stoneware – no chips (other than the mentioned manufacturing flaw), cracks, flakes or crazing.
