A gouge does what a chisel cannot: it removes material in a controlled curve, cleans a hollow, and shapes a surface that a flat blade would tear rather than cut. These hand-forged carving gouges are available in eight widths — individually or as a complete set — so the sweep matches the work rather than forcing an approximation with the wrong size.

The narrow widths — 10, 15, 20 mm — work in tight curves, detail areas, and anywhere the geometry requires precision over speed. The mid-range widths — 25, 30, 35 mm — cover the majority of carving work: roughing hollows, shaping relief, and moving material efficiently across a curved surface. The wider widths — 40, 45 mm — remove material quickly across broad areas and establish the form before the detail work begins.

• Materials: Blades are hand-forged from 52100 carbon steel, hardened to 59 HRC — an edge that holds through extended sessions in basswood, linden, hardwoods, and green wood without rolling or chipping under mallet strikes.
• Handles are shaped from ash, wide enough to drive with a mallet, balanced enough for hand pressure alone, finished with natural oil.
• The set of 8 comes in a leather tool roll, hand-stitched and riveted, with individual slots for each gouge.
