Bring the character and resilience of the Southwestern landscape home with Littleleaf Sumac (Rhus microphylla), a rugged native shrub adapted to intense heat, drought, rocky slopes, alkaline soil, and difficult low-water conditions.

You will receive three (3) live, seed-grown Littleleaf Sumac seedlings, typically approximately 3–5 inches tall, growing together in one pot.

PLEASE READ — THESE ARE YOUNG STARTER SEEDLINGS

These are intentionally offered as young starter plants, not mature shrubs or landscape-size nursery plants.

Typical height at shipping: approximately 3–5 inches.

Please purchase only if 3–5 inch starter seedlings are the size you are looking for.

The seedling photograph shows the approximate size, stage, and appearance of the plants you will receive. The mature-plant photograph is included to show what Littleleaf Sumac can become over time.

Mature-plant photographs are for reference only and do not represent the size of the plants being shipped.

Because these plants are grown from seed, natural variation in height, branching, leaf shape, color, and growth rate is expected.

WHAT YOU’LL RECEIVE

• Three live, seed-grown Littleleaf Sumac seedlings
• Typically approximately 3–5 inches tall at shipping
• Growing together in one nursery pot
• Carefully packaged for shipment
• Planting and acclimation guidance included

WHY GROW LITTLELEAF SUMAC?

Littleleaf Sumac is an uncommon Southwestern native with an unusual combination of toughness, wildlife value, and landscape usefulness.

Its tiny, somewhat leathery leaflets help limit moisture loss and give the plant a fine texture that contrasts beautifully with agaves, yuccas, sotols, cacti, and native grasses. Its densely branched, sculptural form provides interest even when the plant is dormant.

Once established, Littleleaf Sumac can tolerate:

• Intense sun and summer heat
• Extended dry periods
• Rocky, gravelly, and limestone soils
• Alkaline conditions
• Wind and exposed sites
• Lean, nutrient-poor ground

Depending on local conditions, its deciduous foliage may develop shades of rose, burgundy, purple, orange, or red before falling.

WILDLIFE AND LANDSCAPE BENEFITS

Small spring flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects. Female plants may produce fuzzy orange-red fruit that is eaten by songbirds, upland gamebirds, and small mammals. Its dense branches also provide valuable shelter and protective cover.

Its roots and natural colony-forming habit can help stabilize rocky banks, slopes, and erosion-prone ground. It can be used as:

• A wildlife or bird-garden shrub
• A native specimen plant
• An informal hedge or screen
• A stabilizer for dry slopes
• Part of a naturalistic native planting
• A backdrop for desert plants and native grasses
• A restoration shrub for hot, disturbed locations

Allow room for its natural spread. Littleleaf Sumac may produce suckers and gradually develop into a colony. This is useful for erosion control and wildlife habitat but may require occasional management in a smaller garden.

NATIVE RANGE AND HABITAT

Rhus microphylla is native to portions of Texas, New Mexico, southeastern Arizona, Oklahoma, and northern and central Mexico.

In nature, it grows on rocky hillsides, limestone slopes, desert plains, mesas, canyon edges, semidesert grasslands, thornlands, and dry woodland margins. These habitats offer the best clues for growing it successfully: abundant light, excellent drainage, and soil that is not continually wet or excessively rich.

TRADITIONAL INDIGENOUS USES

Littleleaf Sumac has a human history extending far beyond modern landscaping. Archaeologists have recovered its fruit and seeds from ancient deposits at Hinds Cave in the Lower Pecos region of Texas.

Ethnobotanical accounts indicate that Indigenous peoples of the Southwest used Littleleaf Sumac similarly to closely related sumac species. Sumac fruits were eaten fresh, dried for storage, ground into meal, added to soups, or crushed in water to make tart beverages. The Mescalero Apache reportedly combined sumac fruit with baked agave and dried the mixture for later use.

These historical uses are shared for cultural and educational interest only. This plant is sold as a live ornamental plant, not as food, medicine, or an herbal product.

GROWING CONDITIONS

Light: Full sun to light or partial shade

Water: Moderate during establishment; low once established

Soil: Rocky, gravelly, sandy, limestone-based, alkaline, or well-drained clay

Drainage: Excellent drainage is important. Avoid locations where water remains around the roots.

Mature size: Commonly approximately 4–8 feet tall and 8–20 feet wide, although older plants may become larger under favorable conditions

Growth form: Broad, densely branched, deciduous shrub that may gradually form a colony

PLANTING AND CARE

Plant in a location where water drains freely. A slope, berm, raised planting area, or naturally rocky site is often preferable to a low area with heavy, compacted soil.

Water deeply during establishment, allowing the soil to begin drying between waterings. Gradually reduce irrigation as the roots develop.

Littleleaf Sumac does not require rich soil or frequent fertilizer. Excessive water and fertilizer may produce weaker growth that is less characteristic of this naturally drought-adapted plant.

Young plants should be acclimated gradually to intense direct sunlight after shipping. Protect newly planted seedlings from severe weather while they become established.

SAFETY INFORMATION

Littleleaf Sumac should not be confused with poison sumac (Toxicodendron vernix), a wetland species with pale whitish fruit. Rhus microphylla is a dry-land shrub that produces orange-red fruit.

A NATIVE SHRUB WORTH MAKING ROOM FOR

Littleleaf Sumac brings something increasingly valuable to a hot, dry landscape: character without demanding constant care.

Plant it where it has room to develop naturally, and it can become more than a durable background shrub. It can anchor a native planting, shelter birds, help stabilize the soil, and bring the character of the Southwestern landscape closer to home.

For gardeners who value resilient plants with a genuine connection to place, Littleleaf Sumac is an uncommon native worth discovering—and giving a place to grow.

LIVE-ARRIVAL GUARANTEE

Your plants are guaranteed to arrive alive. If a plant is dead when delivered, contact me through Etsy Messages within 24 hours of the carrier’s recorded delivery time and include clear photographs showing:

• The complete plants
• The stems and growing medium
• The shipping container and packaging

Temporary drooping, wilting, leaf loss, discoloration, or minor cosmetic damage can occur during shipping and does not mean that a plant is dead. These conditions are not covered by the live-arrival guarantee.

The guarantee applies only to the plants’ condition at delivery. It does not cover subsequent decline or loss because watering, sunlight, temperature, soil, drainage, transplanting, handling, weather, and other growing conditions are outside my control after delivery.

After reviewing the photographs and delivery information, I will determine whether the live-arrival guarantee applies. Any approved resolution will be handled through Etsy.

I am always happy to help with acclimation and care questions.
