It's the first warm Saturday of summer at the new park. Across the field, a group of kids Maya has never met are playing the best game she has ever seen, chasing a bright red ball. Maya wants to play more than anything. She just has no idea how to ask.

So she sits on the bench to "watch for a minute." Her friend Nia asks, "What if they say yes?" Grandpa Theo says a game might be better with one more, and that it's hers to find out. Then the red ball rolls right up to Maya's sneaker. It's the perfect chance, and the words get stuck. So Maya takes one slow breath, gets up, and walks the long way across the grass to ask out loud.

About the series

Brave Like Me is a set of gentle read-aloud stories about everyday courage: the ordinary scary things that feel huge when you are small. Each book ends the same honest way. Being brave doesn't mean you stop feeling scared; it means doing the thing while you still feel scared. The grown-ups in these books don't fix the fear or talk the child out of it. They stay close while the child does the hard thing. You'll find other Brave Like Me stories in this shop.
