The Spelling Bee

A Brave Like Me story. A printable digital picture book: 20 pages in one PDF, available as an instant download.

Maya is brave about lots of things: the deep end, the dog two houses down, standing up for a friend. The school spelling bee is different. There is a microphone, a little bell that goes DING, and a whole gym full of faces. Maya can spell every word. What scares her is having everyone watch.

Grandpa Theo won't sign her up, and he won't spell for her. He asks her one good question and saves a seat in the third row. The rest is up to Maya.

Reading and printing

About the series

Brave Like Me is a series of gentle read-aloud stories about everyday courage: the ordinary scary things that feel huge when you are five. Every book reaches the same honest ending. Being brave doesn't mean you stop feeling scared. It means doing the thing while you still feel scared. The grown-ups in these books don't fix the fear or talk the child out of it. They stay close while the child does the hard thing.

Please note
