On the last night of October 1931, Lord Ashcombe's guests would not go home. His secretary, Miss Pell, dealt them a murder game in the Hall while the Halloween party was still going, then out in the churchyard by lantern light, at a seance in the Library at midnight, and before dawn in the chapel and the cellars. Every guest came in costume. This is her notebook of that night: twenty murders from dusk to dawn.

Each case is a floor plan, with 6 to 8 suspects in costume and statements about where they stood, every one of them true. Place one suspect in every row and every column. The one suspect in the room with the body is the murderer. There are no numbers to fill in: it is called murder sudoku because of that one rule.

HOW IT WAS MADE
The puzzles, the suspects' statements and the step-by-step solutions are produced by the author's own puzzle generator, which is conventional software, not AI, and every case was checked by a solver that reasons the way a person does. The illustrations (portraits and their Halloween costumes, furniture, floors and the page ornaments) were generated with PixelLab, an AI image tool, then retouched to one house style and composed into each floor plan by the author. The writing around the puzzles (the story, the rules, the case titles and the phrasing of the hints and solutions) was drafted with AI assistance (Claude) and edited by the author.
