Lilith is an ancient Sumerian goddess. Throughout the many legends, she was believed to be Adam’s first wife. So, when Adam demanded that she be submissive ... she gave him the ancient finger. Lilith saw herself, and knew that she was Adam’s equal. Nothing could, would, or ever should change her point of view, so she was shunned by her husband.
Shortly after, these legends also say that Eve became Adam’s new wife. Originally, she was the submissive partner Adam had wanted. However, Lilith did not want Eve to live a life being ruled by Adam, so she convinced Eve to eat from the tree of knowledge. This is where Lilith gets her associations with serpents & apples. It’s also said that she makes her home inside the trees.
As oppressing people became more powerful, they started to depict Lilith as a demoness. These oppressive sorts decided to claim that she would suck the blood from children in their sleep, even though her role in the original legends was that of a protector who helped women in childbirth, and would help nurse infants when their mother’s were unable. They simply couldn’t handle Lilith’s wisdom & courage.
Some people today try to claim that she is a succubus, who sits on the chests of a men at night, & feeds them erotic dreams. My ancestors believed that this was a story, created to shame men & push them away from their own sexuality as well. They couldn’t tell the oppressive people in charge, that they simply had natural & normal fantasies…. That passion and sexuality are NORMAL.
What stands out about Lilith, is her courage & wisdom. Even after people tried to demonize her, she continued to be herself, embrace her sexuality, and had also continued to share her wisdom with anyone who was willing and open enough to listen.
She truly is a goddess of freedom, independence, ancient wisdom, and equality. This girl has a spine, so if you ever need the energy to stand up for yourself, or to fully embrace who you are regardless of any disapproving eyes around you..... Lilith is one of the best goddesses to draw energy from.
