Quick description: A hyperlinked digital kit for use in any notetaking app on the iPad or other device that accommodates workable pdf’s and stickers with transparent backgrounds. It is not really meant for printing, but you could print pages from the pdf’s if you desire.

If you utilize a notetaking app on the iPad, and especially if you’re a lover of illuminated manuscripts and old flora and fauna ephemera, this is such a fun kit!! I stumbled upon the Mira Calligraphae Monumenta (A Model Book of Calligraphy) on the Internet one day and immediately fell in love! It is such a wonderful, beautiful book, I could browse the pages of it forever. It was a collaboration between Georg Bocskay, who originally did the calligraphy on the pages, and Joris Hoefnagel, who was commissioned to provide the illumination thirty years later.

With this kit, you can create your own marvelous illuminated pages, whether it’s just popping in illustrations here and there on your journaling pages or creating full-page collages. What you decide to do with it is pretty open-ended and limitless!


This is kind of a complex item in terms of what’s included but it’s all pictured in the viewing sheets. The first photo shows three journal pages I created in the blank journal, which is shown in the second photo. You won’t get any of those pages in the first photo, but you can easily create them using the junk journal and stickers. The junk journal is ready for you to do anything you wish with. The tabs along the side of each page are hyperlinked to the sections and in the top left-hand corner of each page is an ant which will take you to the Content Page. From there, you can access any page in the notebook.

Section 1 consists of 35 pages and Sections 2 and 3 consist of 5 pages each. You can add to any of the sections using the pdf refill books which are included. I set it up this way to give you options on paper choices - which include bullet journal dot style, lined, blank and black. The refill sections each contain a table of contents which is hyperlinked to each individual page and each page again has an ant in the corner to take you back to the Content Page for that refill book. The ants on the refill pages, though, face in the opposite direction which is handy to keep track of whether you’re in the base book or the refill! If you use Noteshelf, you can set up bookmarks to quickly and easily get to refill sections within the main book.

The refill paper is pictured in Photo 7. I also included a shell journal which consists of simply four pages - the cover and three section dividers. You can then create a totally customized version using the refills. That is pictured in Photo 6 with the mixed refill book featured on the right side.

Photos 3, 4 and 5 are of the Noteshelf 2 junk journal sticker book. All the files in the sticker books are included as .pngs if you don’t use that particular app. But Noteshelf is just perfect for this and I had so much fun creating all the pages shown in Photos 1, 9 and 10 directly in it. There are some instruction pages in the books included for using in Noteshelf 2.

Photo 8 features the 16 cover designs that are included. You can use these as covers on any notebook in any notetaking app that allows you to use your own custom covers.

Then the last two photos are some pages I created using the kit. Again, none of these are included but you can easily duplicate and customize using the kit. In the last photo, the two pages at the very bottom are pages I created in other journals using the stickers from this kit. It really gives you a lot of mileage and options!

Of course, digital can never replace good old-fashioned paper journals, but they certainly have their place. I use an iPad Pro with the Apple pen and I truly love working in Noteshelf digitally. It has a very close to paper and pen feel that I really haven’t found with other notetaking apps. And it’s much easier to spend spare minutes in a doctor’s waiting room or during lunch break at work, for example, working on a digital junk journal than a real one, and if your pull toward junk journals is just to spend some me time being creative and having a place to document your days, your thoughts, beautiful old images and the things important to you, it works superbly! It also helps in getting past being frozen when working on a real paper version... I get so hung up with indecision on pages because I don’t want to “ruin” them. Digitally, hit the duplicate page button and experiment!

If after reading this you’re thinking “Why would you do this?,” this is not a product for you. Move on. If, however, your heart is racing with all the possibilities of junk journaling digitally, you REALLY need to consider buying it now!! And I do mean right now! Otherwise you’ll be saying, “What took me so long?!”
