History:
History of the modern key can be traced back to it's earliest known predecessor of ancient Babylon and Egypt. When the use of locks appeared in these regions, so too, were the first keys. These lock and key combos however, were made entirely of wood and the bases solely relied on a hidden opening near the bolt. By using a key, shaped like a toothbrush, the person could lift small pins within the mechanism and unlock the bolt. Oldest examples of these ancient locks were found in the Assyrian palace of Khorasabad, in a biblical city of Nineveh; they've been dated to around 704 BC

The discovery of iron and bronze changed the look of lock and key into something more familiar. Engineers and inventors of ancient Rome were able to improve the earlier designs of wood using these materials. They were able to make both the duo of lock - key much stronger, while allowing the key to be light enough to be carried. Another great invention of this time altered the appearance of the key; the invention and introduction of wards in locks shaped keys from large flat structures of wood with pins on the end, to what we can identify today as a "Skeleton Key".
