This is an interesting illustration showing how Sassafras leaves look like mittens, from the 1902 book, Stories of Woods and Fields. This illustration accompanied a poem entitled Sassafras Mittens. One line reads, "And sassafras with mittens For little boys and girls" How cute! Below the picture it reads A Pair of Mittens.
