No Fiber Left Behind!!
J'ai commencé à travailler avec la fibre dans les années 1970 et j'ai confectionné de nombreux gilets Grandma Square qui étaient très populaires à l'époque. Je ris encore du nombre de combinaisons de couleurs que j'avais.
Qui aurait cru qu’ils connaîtraient à nouveau une popularité croissante ?
Une fois que j'ai pris ma retraite de l'enseignement, le tricot est entré dans ma vie. Au fur et à mesure que mes compétences se sont développées, mon intérêt pour tout ce qui touche aux fibres s'est accru.
Je me souviens surtout qu'en regardant les livres One Skein Wonders, les modèles qui m'attiraient le plus utilisaient du fil filé à la main. C'est alors qu'est venue la nécessité d'apprendre à filer.
Ensuite, j'ai commencé à teindre de la laine peignée avec du Kool-Aid et je me suis lancée dans une nouvelle expérience d'apprentissage. J'allais dans un magasin de laine local et j'achetais 4 oz de laine peignée Falkland que je teignais ensuite, filais en fil et tricotais un petit bonnet et des mitaines pour un enfant. Une fois, j'ai acheté un kilo de laine et je me suis dit : "Oh mon Dieu, qu'est-ce que je vais faire avec autant de laine ?" Il ne devrait pas être choquant que de nombreuses pièces de ma maison soient désormais envahies par des équipements pour la laine et les fibres.
Après avoir entendu parler de la Phat Fiber Box contenant des échantillons de fils et de fibres teints à la main, j'ai pensé que j'aimerais faire partie de cette communauté. On m'a dit que j'avais besoin d'une boutique Etsy pour participer et « Friends in Fiber » est né. En me voyant attribuer un thème chaque mois, mon imagination a été mise au défi de créer des coloris pour représenter les thèmes. Beaucoup de ces coloris sont toujours populaires et disponibles dans la boutique.
Mon amour pour tout ce qui touche aux fibres continue de croître et m'apporte joie et satisfaction en créant de nouveaux coloris, en filant des fibres et en tricotant, tissant ou feutrant avec elles.
I started working with fiber in the 1970's and made many Granny Square vests which were quite popular at the time. Still laugh about how many color combinations I had.
Who would have thought that they would rise again in popularity?
Once I retired from teaching, knitting entered my life. As my skills grew so did my interest in all things fiber.
I remember most that while looking at the One Skein Wonders books, the patterns I was most drawn to used handspun yarn. So, then came the need to learn to spin.
Next, I started dabbling with dyeing wool top with Kool-Aid and I was off on another new learning experience. I would go to a local wool shop and buy 4 Oz. of Falkland combed top which I then dyed, spun into yarn and knit a little hat and mittens for a child. Once I bought a pound of fiber and thought OMG what am I going to do with so much wool? It shouldn't be shocking that now many parts of my home have been overtaken with wool and fiber equipment.
After hearing about the Phat Fiber Box containing samples of hand dyed yarn and fiber, I thought I would love to be part of this community. I was told that I needed an Etsy shop to participate so "Friends in Fiber" was born. By being assigned a theme every month my imagination was challenged to create colorways to represent the themes. Many of these colorways are still popular and available in the shop.
My love for all things fiber continues to grow and bring me joy and satisfaction in creating new colorways, spinning fiber and knitting, weaving or felting with it.
