"My grandfather," the young man said, a crack in his nervous facade. "He wore it every single day. Since before I was born."
Marcus looked from the young man back to the Datejust, then to his own flawless Speedmaster, and finally, he picked up his brass loupe. "Tell me about your grandfather."
The young man blinked, confused. "He… he was a jazz musician. Played the piano in clubs all over London. He saved up his gigs for two years to buy this Rolex in 1974."
Marcus smiled faintly. He could almost hear the jazz. "This watch," Marcus began, his voice taking on a resonant quality, "is more than stainless steel and gold. It’s a record of his life. The grime in the bracelet? That’s sweat from long nights on stage. The scratches on the crystal? Each one is a memory. When he checked the time before his final set, he looked at this dial. This watch held his time."
The young man stared at the watch, seeing it differently now. The scratches weren’t flaws; they were history.
"An 'investment' might make you money," Marcus continued, "but it will never give you back the time. This watch is time. It’s his time. Once it's sold, that legacy is gone."
Marcus put the loupe down and gently placed the Datejust back into the young man's palm. "I can restore this for you. I can make it run as smoothly as it did the day he bought it, while preserving its character. I will clean the bracelet, service the movement, and give it the dignity it deserves. For free."
