Old geometry, quietly made for today
Clavis & Compass entstand aus der Faszination für die Ränder alter Bücher: die Kreise, Sterne und beschrifteten Ränder, die die Seiten von Renaissance-Grimoires, alchemistischen Abhandlungen und den Notizbüchern früher Geometer schmücken. Diese Siegel wurden mit nichts weiter als einem Zirkel, einem Lineal und Geduld gefertigt. Sie waren dazu bestimmt, betrachtet und weitergegeben zu werden, nicht um achtlos vorbeigeeilt zu werden.
Unser Name leitet sich von diesen beiden Instrumenten ab. Clavis ist Latein für Schlüssel, das, was öffnet. Der Zirkel zeichnet den Kreis, die erste und älteste Form der Ordnung. Zwischen ihnen liegt alles, was wir erschaffen.
Jedes Siegel der Serie I ist ein Originalentwurf, in Gold auf Schwarz gezeichnet und nach strengen geometrischen Prinzipien gestaltet, ohne Cliparts oder entlehnte Symbole. Um jeden Rand verläuft ein lateinisches Motto, das aufgrund seiner Botschaft an den Leser gewählt wurde:
- I · Clavis: Quod clausum est aperietur. Was verschlossen ist, soll geöffnet werden.
- II · Circinus: Omnia in mensura et numero. Alle Dinge in Maß und Zahl.
- III · Lux: Lux ex tenebris oritur. Licht erhebt sich aus der Dunkelheit.
- IV · Silentium: In silenceio sapientia. Im Schweigen Weisheit.
- V · Porta: Per portam ad astra. Durch das Tor zu den Sternen.
Unsere erste Kollektion präsentiert diese Siegel auf bernsteinfarbenen Sojakerzen mit schwarzen Deckeln – ein Apotheker-Look, der im entzündeten Zustand sanft leuchtet. Jede Kerze ist als kleines Ritual der Achtsamkeit gedacht: ein Moment, um die Flamme zu entzünden, das Motto zu lesen und zu entscheiden, womit man beginnen, etwas öffnen oder etwas beenden möchte.
Zwei Dinge sollten uns klar sein. Erstens: Unsere Kerzen werden auf Bestellung gefertigt und von unserem Produktionspartner Printify über deren Kerzenherstellungsnetzwerk gegossen, bedruckt und versandt. Das bedeutet, dass nichts im Lager liegt und jede Bestellung speziell für Sie angefertigt wird. Zweitens: Wir erheben keinerlei Anspruch auf magische Wirkung. Ein Siegel wird Ihr Schicksal nicht verändern. Es kann Ihnen jedoch ein schönes, sorgfältig gestaltetes Objekt und einen Anlass zum Innehalten schenken, und wir glauben, dass dies sehr wertvoll ist.

Clavis & Compass began with a fascination for the margins of old books: the circles, stars and lettered rims that fill the pages of Renaissance grimoires, alchemical treatises and the notebooks of early geometers. Those seals were made with nothing more than a compass, a straightedge and patience. They were built to be contemplated and handed down, not to be hurried past.
Our name comes from those two instruments. Clavis is Latin for key, the thing that opens. The compass draws the circle, the first and oldest shape of order. Between them sits everything we make.
Each seal in Series I is an original design, drawn in gold on black and built from true geometry, with no stock clip art and no borrowed symbols. Around every rim runs a Latin motto, chosen for what it asks of the person reading it:

Our first collection sets these seals on amber soy candles with black lids, an apothecary look that glows softly once lit. Each one is offered as a small ritual of attention: a moment to light a flame, read the motto and decide what you mean to begin, open or set down.
We should be clear about two things. First, our candles are made to order and poured, printed and dispatched by our production partner, Printify, through their candle-making network. That means nothing sits in a warehouse and every order is made for you. Second, we make no claims to magic. A seal will not change your fortunes. What it can do is give you a beautiful, deliberate object and a reason to pause, and we think that is worth a great deal.
