A tribute to my father...
L’histoire de ma boutique, mais d’abord un peu d’histoire...
Le groupe d’Amérindiens connu sous le nom de Comanches a dominé les plaines américaines pendant des centaines d’années et avait une forte présence particulière sur les prairies ouvertes du Texas. Ten Bears fut l’un des derniers grands chefs des Comanches et est largement connu pour son discours à William Tecumseh Sherman en octobre 1867. Dans ce discours, Ten Bears a affirmé ses croyances sur l’empiètement des colons ainsi que son désir de maintenir les terres et les traditions qui avaient été le mode de vie des Comanches pendant des centaines d’années.
Alors, qu’est-ce que cela a à voir avec ma boutique ETSY et pourquoi ? Le nom est un hommage à mon défunt père. Mon père était un historien amateur passionné par l’histoire amérindienne, hispanique et de guerre. Enfant, je me souviens d’avoir souvent entendu des histoires sur le passé. Dans ma jeunesse, je n’étais pas particulièrement intéressé mais la vie n’est pas sans ironie. Je suis moi-même devenu professeur d’histoire dans le sud du Texas. Mon père a pris sa retraite en 1995, il a ensuite créé une entreprise de passe-temps recréant des armes et des objets cérémoniels amérindiens fonctionnels. Il a appelé son entreprise de passe-temps Ten Bears Outpost. Je me souviens lui avoir demandé pourquoi, de tous les autres grands chefs, pourquoi Dix Ours ? Il a dit que les Comanches étaient connus pour leurs compétences au combat et à la guerre, mais que les Dix Ours avaient quelque chose de spécial. Bien que grand guerrier, l’histoire se souvient plus de sa diplomatie que de ses compétences au combat. C’est un peu en contradiction avec les conceptions communes des traditions comanches. Il me disait que « choisir un combat est facile, mais avoir une bonne raison de se battre est difficile ».
Mes compétences en tant que charpentier sont apprises de mon grand-père, qui a passé la majeure partie de sa vie dans diverses professions du travail du bois dans le sud du Texas. C’est un maître charpentier qui a oublié plus de choses sur le travail du bois que je ne le saurai peut-être jamais. À ce jour, je le vénère toujours pour ses compétences et j’apprends encore de ses vastes connaissances et de ses expériences de vie.
Enfin un peu sur moi. Je suis un Hispanique américain de troisième génération, né dans le sud du Texas. J’ai grandi dans une petite ville simple à l’extérieur de San Antonio. J’ai passé du début au milieu de mes 20 ans dans l’US Air Force stationné principalement dans le Montana. Après mon enrôlement, j’ai passé la fin de mes 20 ans à Corpus Christi TX, où j’ai fréquenté des études supérieures en vue d’obtenir ma licence d’enseignement. Actuellement, je suis au milieu de mes 30 ans enseignant la macroéconomie avancée et l’histoire militaire du nord-est de San Antonio.
The story of my shop, but first a little bit of history...
The group of Native Americans known as the Comanche dominated the American plains for hundreds of years and had a particularity strong presence on the open grasslands of Texas. Ten Bears was one of the last great chiefs of the Comanche and is widely known for his address to William Tecumseh Sherman in October 1867. Within this address, Ten Bears asserted his beliefs about the encroachment of settlers as well as his desire to maintain lands and traditions which had been the way of life for the Comanche for hundreds of years.
So, what and why does this have anything to do with my ETSY shop? The name is a tribute to my late father. My father was an amateur historian with a passion for Native American, Hispanic, and War time history. As a child, I remember many times hearing stories about the past. As a youth I was not particularity interested but life is not without its irony. I myself have become a history teacher in South Texas. My father retired in 1995, he then created a hobby business recreating functional Native American weaponry and ceremonial items. He called his hobby business Ten Bears Outpost. I remember asking him why, of all the other great chiefs, why Ten Bears? He said that the Comanche were known for their skills in battle and war but Ten Bears had something special. While a great warrior, history remembers more about his diplomacy rather than his combat skills. This is a bit of a contradiction with common understandings of Comanche traditions. He would tell me that, "picking a fight is easy, but having a good reason to fight is hard."
My skills as a carpenter are learned from my grandfather, who spent most of his life in various wood working occupations throughout South Texas. He is a master carpenter who has forgotten more about woodworking then I may ever know. To this very day I still revere him for his skill, and am still learning from his vast knowledge and life experiences.
Finally a little bit about me. I am a third generation American Hispanic, born in South Texas. I grew up in a small simple town outside of San Antonio. I spent my early to mid 20's in the U.S. Air Force stationed mostly in Montana. After my enlistment, I spent my late 20's in Corpus Christi TX, where I attended graduate school working towards my teaching license. Currently I am in my mid 30's teaching advanced Macroeconomics and Military History North East San Antonio.
