History of Johnston Custom Woodwork
Johnston Custom Woodwork – Crafting Legacy in Walnut and Beyond
My journey began in electronics, with 25 years commuting to Atlanta as a technician. But woodworking runs in my blood—my dad owned a custom cabinet shop, and I grew up helping with installations alongside my family. Over a decade ago, I stepped into the shop full‑time, learning the craft and carrying it forward into a new generation.
When the housing recession slowed the cabinet business, I turned to designing wood kits and small‑batch projects. Each design is my own, carefully drawn and tested to be teachable, practical, and enjoyable. From birdhouse kits for families and scouts to handcrafted walnut phone cases, every piece reflects my commitment to transparency, sustainability, and legacy.
The walnut I use today has its own story: milled over 50 years ago from a tree on my uncle’s farm, it’s been given a second chance in my workshop. I cut around imperfections to reveal the best grain, turning leftover boards into functional, one‑of‑a‑kind creations.
For me, woodworking isn’t just a job—it’s the most enjoyable work I’ve ever had. Each item I make carries a piece of history, crafted with care to be both useful and meaningful.
