Hello, I'm Steve Shaw and I'm an artist and teacher living in Atlanta, Georgia. So many people will tell you that they wish they could quit their day job and become a full-time artist. I have to say, that is not me. I love teaching. I love working with kids everyday and sharing my gifts with them as they share their quirky creativity and energy with me. I discovered at a fairly young age that I wasn't really motivated by money and I needed a career that would give my life purpose. Teaching has certainly done that for me. This is my 20th year teaching at the same school and I love waking every morning and going to teach the children.
That being said, I love being an artist too! For the last twenty years (I'm in my early 50's now) I have focused on being a full time father as my wife an I have raised our kids. But during those precious times between being a teacher and being a dad, I have carved out time to created my art.
My summers are generally spent in my out-door studio making fish paintings and sculptures. Please feel free to check out my work at ArtBySteveShaw.com. Over the years I have had the moderate success one would expect from a person only focused on art part-time.
Now my children are in their teens and I'm finding there is more time for my artwork. During this new-found time I have discovered (I might even say have been seduced) by this wonderful art form called Acrylic Pour Painting.
I absolutely love this style of art! What makes it so much fun is that you can’t control these paintings they way you can a traditional painting. With pour paintings you choose the colors and the canvas but after that, the paint takes on a life of its own. Once the paint meets the canvas all you can do is influence the design as the colors mix, blend, pool, and separate. The poured paint becomes a dance of color evolving as you look on in awe. Sometimes you feel like you are watching the birth of an entire galaxy right in front of your eyes. It is incredibly exciting and satisfying.
I have told my friends that I'm not sure if this new relationship with pour painting is a summer romance or an all our love affair. But either way I am putting my other artwork on hold while I journey down this artistic road.
I hope you enjoy my work and find time to watch some of the painting videos I have started posting on youtube and acrylicpourart.com. This acrylic pour art form is going to be a fun ride and you are welcome to join me.
