About

Ethnic Couture and Home Decor, Textiles and Adornments

My name is Asia Sikkila and my life was changed forever by a trip to Africa in 1998. Drawn by the music, and energized by the dance, I experienced a sense of familiarity with that ancient land, the warm kindness of the people, the dramatic brilliant fabrics sewn into colorful clothing.

When I touched ground in the Casamance the market garden of Senegal, I realized Awanya---the strength of the farmer. I drew breath and heard the messages of Africa: grow food and live simply, celebrate family and community, learn from the elders and teach the children. The strength of the farmer became a source of inspiration for me. Thus were the seeds of Awanya planted.

On my return to the US I started to bring the African fabrics into our local dance community, sewing the seeds of my experience and inspiration into clothes that convey the beauty and wonder that had opened in me. A self-taught designer, initially I sewed simple lapas, the wrap skirts we wear when we dance from hand-dyed Indigo cloth and tie-dye designs.
Over the years the selection has grown into an ever-changing collection of sophisticated dynamic clothing for women, men and children with both traditional and modern elements.
