It All Started in the Eighth Grade
I have been sewing since I was about 12 years old when I took a sewing class in the eighth grade. However, I didn't start making my own designs until I was in college. A roommate had given me a really awesome little bag from her native Iran and I loved it so much that I carried it everywhere. After I wore the thing out, I copied the design and made myself a similar one, though not quite as cool!
When my two daughters were old enough to appreciate things like handbags and purses, I started making my own designs for them. Each time I made something new, I would improve my skill. My daughters, no doubt, will always remember me saying of my latest creation, "this is some of my best work!"
I generally like to work with natural fibers, preferring to make my bags from cotton, silk, linen or hemp. Because I'm not a fan of making the same thing twice, I'm unlikely to become much of a production worker. I tend to do my best work when coming up with a new design or making plans for using different fabric on an old one.
I rarely buy new materials for my handbags, but prefer repurposing or just buying fabric that is vintage. Whenever possible, I purchase someone's leftover fabric scraps, or even thread, at garage sales or thrift stores. If I have to buy beads, I try to buy locally and I also like to support the many talented artisans on Etsy.
