I used to love selling on Etsy as a hobby, but the fees are too high for a casual crafter.

Furthermore, mass-produced items have taken over the marketplace, making it hard for handmade items to be seen in search results. I never made much money but earned enough to break even and joked that I could almost reliably count on Etsy to pay for my Netflix account. However, I went from a few dozen hits a month (a sale or two) during my peak in 2022 and watched as traffic slowly descended to almost zero hits.

A year ago, I realized I hadn't made a sale in a year. I shut down the auto-renews that reposted my shop's items, as Etsy was costing me money. The only way to keep the shop open with enough hits to break even would have been to spend money on advertisements, sponsored search results, etc., and, while I'm sure that works for the more professional shops with full-time artisans, I wasn't willing to do this more than in my spare time.

It was a hobby, not a job, but it was great while it lasted. Thanks for the fun memories!

p.s. Remember when Netflix plans without ads were $7.99 a month and you could share your account with your parents?
