Hallo, ich bin Merle, ich bin der Gründer, Besitzer, PR-Manager, Buchhalter, Texter, Fotograf, Administrator, Packer und allgemeine Hundekörper von Merle Made Tales. Ich bin auch und vor allem der Illustrator: Spezialisiert auf traditionelle Illustrationen, die die natürliche Welt und die Universalität von Geschichten widerspiegeln.
Merle Made Tales kreiert entzückende Karten-, Geschenkpapier- und Schreibwarenillustrationen, die sich auf saisonale Themen wie schneebedeckte nordische Märchen für Weihnachten, lebensvolle Tierbabys und Gucknospen für den Frühling, berühmte Literaturliebeszitate für Sommerhochzeiten und dunkle Wälder (mit einer Hexe oder zwei) für den Herbst konzentrieren.
Worte und Erzählungen hatten schon immer einen starken Einfluss auf meine Bilder. Da ich klein war, zeichneten meine Schwester und ich, die wir uns für Tolkien hielten, detailliert die Menschen und Orte epischer Geschichten, die wir für uns selbst geschaffen hatten. Wir könnten stundenlang verloren sein und Seite an Seite im Bett sitzen, mit unserem Papier und Bleistiften, die auf gebundenen Büchern ruhen, die über unseren Schoß gedrückt sind. Heutzutage entstehen meine Illustrationen aus einer hügeligen Landschaft von Kunstmaterialien auf einem alten Esstisch und basieren mehr auf Märchen, der Natur und literarischen Klassikern, aber auf dem Weg dorthin habe ich diese intime Beziehung zwischen Wort und Bild beibehalten.
Bewaffnet mit einem Korb voller Pinsel und einem Druckbleistift immer zur Hand, erschaffe ich Arbeiten, die oft klein und mit dekorativen Details gefüllt sind. Meine Illustrationen erzählen Geschichten, die von Literatur und Märchen inspiriert sind. Mit der Natur und den Tieren als Hauptreferenz verwende ich Aquarelle und tiefgründige, farbenfrohe Details, um einen sofort zugänglichen, warmen Reiz zu schaffen.
Ich lasse mich von den Werken von Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac und Kay Nielsen inspirieren, deren reiche und magische Tusche- und Aquarellillustrationen an der Wende zum 20. Jahrhundert das "Goldene Zeitalter der Illustration" hervorbrachten. Dies war eine Zeit des Kunsthandwerks, des Jugendstils und der Präraffaeliten.
Meine Bilder erzählen immer Geschichten, in der Tat denke ich, dass Illustratoren im Wesentlichen Geschichtenerzähler sind. Ich finde endlose Inspiration aus Literatur und Märchen. Ich genieße es, die Stimmung, die Magie, das Gefühl und etwas von der inneren Sehnsucht des Schreibens oder der Charaktere, die ich porträtiere, einzufangen und hervorzurufen.
Überwiegend ein Aquarellkünstler, verwende ich gerne die lebendigen, pigmentbasierten Farben von Windsor und Newtons professionellem Sortiment, um Bilder zu schaffen, die gleichzeitig die subtilen Töne einer gefrorenen Tundra oder die brillanten Farbtöne eines indischen Sommers erzeugen könnten. Ich schöpfe auch aus meinem anglo-indischen Erbe, um kühne, komplizierte Muster und animierte Themen zu schaffen, die sich jeweils zu einer Geschichte verbinden.
Dieser Sinn für Natur und Erzählung erstreckt sich auch auf andere Aspekte von Merle Made Tales, wo viel Sorgfalt darauf verwendet wird, ökologisch gesunde Produkte und Druckmethoden für meine Illustrationsarbeit zu beschaffen. Ich lebe jetzt in East Sussex, im Herzen des Ashdown Forest, wo übrigens auch Whinnie the Pooh lebt.

Hi, I'm Merle, I am the founder, owner, PR manager, book keeper, copywriter, photographer, administrator, packer and general dogsbody of Merle Made Tales. I am also, and most importantly, the illustrator: Specialising in traditional illustrations that reflect the natural world and the universality of stories.
Merle Made Tales creates delightful card, wrapping paper and stationery illustrations that are focused on seasonal themes such as snow-laden Nordic fairytales for Christmas, life-filled baby animals and peeping buds for spring, famous literature love quotes for summer weddings and darkening forests (with a witch or two) for Autumn.
Words and narrative have always had a strong influence on my images. Since I was small, my sister and I, fancying ourselves Tolkien, would draw in detail the people and places of epic stories we'd created for ourselves. We could be lost for hours, sitting side by side in bed with our paper and pencils resting on hardback books pressed across our laps. These days my illustrations are produced from a hilly landscape of art materials on an old dining table and are more closely based on fairytales, the natural world and literary classics but, along the way, I've retained that intimate relationship between word and image.
Armed with a basketfull of brushes and a mechanical pencil always to hand, I create work that is often small in scale and filled with decorative detail. My illustrations tell stories inspired by literature and fairytales. Using nature and animals as the main reference, I use watercolours and in-depth, colourful detail to creates an immediately accessible, warm appeal.
I draw inspiration from the works of Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac and Kay Nielsen, whose rich and magical ink and watercolour illustrations at the turn of the 20th century, gave rise to the ‘Golden Age of Illustration’. This was a time of Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and the Pre-Raphaelites.
My images always tell stories, in fact, I think illustrators are essentially storytellers. I find endless inspiration from literature and fairytales. I enjoy capturing and evoking the mood, the magic, the feeling and something of the internal yearning of the writing or the characters I portray.
Predominantly a watercolour artist, I like to use the vibrant, pigment based colours of Windsor and Newtons professional range to create images that might at once produce the subtle tones of a frozen tundra or the brilliant hues of an Indian summer. I also draw from my Anglo-Indian heritage to create bold, intricate patterns and animated subjects that each combine to create a story.
This sense of nature and narrative extends into other aspects of Merle Made Tales, where much care is taken in sourcing ecologically sound products and printing methods for my illustration work. I now lives in East Sussex, in the heart of the Ashdown Forest where, incidentally, Whinnie the Pooh also lives.
