This customer inquired about a custom made set of legs built to a special, larger size which I agreed to build at no extra charge. Upon receiving the finished pieces, the customer immediately asked to return the product and indicated that the legs "don't look great in the room." Even though there was no actual defect, I offered the customer a partial refund to compensate for his disappointment; which he declined. Etsy policy and my policy are quite clear that custom commissioned work is not returnable. Nonetheless, I offered to take the product back once I was able to find a new buyer. I was polite, responsive and accommodating throughout. I don't know what else was reasonable for me to do.

When you order something from me, you are commissioning a piece of artwork constructed specifically for you and made to your specifications. Of course, any product I advertise is standardized to a degree. But the fact remains that it is built specifically for the customer that orders it. You are not buying a ready made product that happens to be sitting in inventory. Each piece requires a considerable investment in terms of materials, labor and also the cost of freight. Given the size and weight of most of my products those investments are not trivial. Because of that, I simply cannot accept returns, cancellations or exchanges on an unrestricted basis. I don't like having to put that statement out there in such uncompromising terms but experience has unfortunately made it a necessity. I have run into a situation in which a customer commissioned a custom piece of work. When they received it they just didn't like the way it looked in the room and wanted to return it. A business like Ikea can afford to accommodate that. I cannot. If something is damaged in transit or in some other way defective, I will of course make it right. Everything I ship is insured so that we're both protected. If you are really unhappy with something once you get it, I will work with you to try to find a new home for it. But I can't guarantee that effort will be successful. And given that some of the costs, freight most notably, are not recoverable it is likely that you will not recoup the entire purchase price even if I am able to find a new home for your piece. The bottom line is as follows: I stand behind my work 100% and will take responsibility for defects or damage in transit. But if you've just changed your mind I'll try to help but make no guarantees.
