Eight Years of Making
In de zomer van 2014 werkten Matt en Alyssa allebei op een kantoor in Connecticut. Dagen waren gevuld met berichten over en weer, en op een dag stuurde Matt Alyssa een foto van een palletwijnrek dat hij op Pinterest vond. "Ik kan dit bouwen", zei hij. Een paar uur na het werk kreeg Alyssa een sms van Matt met een foto van het afgewerkte wijnrek. Binnen een paar weken had hij zijn eerste salontafel gebouwd en Alyssa bedacht dat ze op pallethout kon schilderen met houtbeits. Vrienden en familie bevestigden dat ze iets aan het doen waren.
Al snel vroegen mensen om stukken te kopen. De hobby ging verder als een bijbaantje, terwijl Alyssa en Matt plannen maakten om het grootste deel van hun bezittingen te verkopen en naar North Carolina te verhuizen, waar ze zouden werken en Alyssa een PhD-programma kon volgen. Echte banen kwamen er nooit en het schooljaar begon nooit. Vanaf september 2014 was Simply Pallets hun fulltime carrière.
Vandaag, na veel vallen en opstaan, bewegingen, mislukkingen en triomfen, doen Alyssa en Matt nog steeds waar ze van houden, nu als gezin. Wonend in de uitlopers van de Appalachen, heeft hun liefde voor maken zich verspreid van Pallet-decor tot een levensstijl van wandelen, tuinieren en het opvoeden van boerderijdieren met hun kinderen en hond. Samen werkt het paar aan het creëren van stukken geïnspireerd door hun omgeving, in de hoop hun liefde voor de natuur en eenvoudig leven met de wereld te delen.

During the summer of 2014 Matt and Alyssa were both working in an office in Connecticut. Days were filled with messages back and forth, and one day Matt sent Alyssa a picture of a pallet wine rack he found on Pinterest. "I can build this," he said. A few hours after work Alyssa got a text from Matt with a picture of the finished wine rack. Within a couple weeks he had built his first coffee table and Alyssa figured out she could paint on pallet wood with wood stain. Friends and family confirmed- they were on to something.
Soon people were asking to purchase pieces. The hobby continued as a side gig, while Alyssa and Matt made plans to sell most of their belongings and move to North Carolina where they would work and Alyssa could pursue a PhD program. Real jobs never came, and the school year never started. From September 2014 forward, Simply Pallets was their full time career.
Today, after much trial and error, moves, failures and triumphs, Alyssa and Matt are still doing what they love, now as a family. Living in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains, their love of making has spread from Pallet decor to include a lifestyle of hiking, gardening, and raising farm animals with their children and dog. Together the couple works to create pieces inspired by their surroundings, in the hopes of sharing their love of nature and simple living with the world.
