Die Leute fragen mich, wer Oahu Lew ist? Oahu Lew ist der coolste Typ, den ich kenne. Ich wollte erwachsen werden, um genau wie er zu sein. Er liebte das Leben, war super Outdoor, immer auf der Suche nach einem neuen Abenteuer, bräunte, buffte und drehte einmal mit bloßen Händen ein Skiboot um, während er sich am Wasserskiseil zurückzog. Am Ende des Tages erzählte er seinen Kumpels fantastische Geschichten, die tropische Bilder in den Kopf meines kleinen Mädchens malen würden.
Bereits 1956 wurde er von der Fort Irwin Army Base in Barstow, Kalifornien, entlassen. Er liebte Südkalifornien so sehr, dass er blieb. Innerhalb weniger Monate traf er meine Makuahini und sie waren verlobt, um zu heiraten. Als Hochzeitsgeschenk fertigte sie ihm ein handgenähtes Hawaiihemd an. Es wurde aus braunem Hibiskus-Druckstoff mit roten Akzenten und beliebten, damals horizontalen Knopflöchern mit kokosnussbraunen Bakelitknöpfen gefertigt. Mit diesem Shirt fing alles an! Eine Liebesaffäre mit Vintage-Hawaiihemden. Jedes Shirt erzählt seine eigene Geschichte von Romantik, Abenteuer, Leidenschaft, spritziger Farbe und Spaß. People ask me who is Oahu Lew? Oahu Lew is the coolest guy I know. I wanted to grow up to be just like him. He loved life, was super outdoorsy, always looking for a new adventure, tan , buff and flipped a ski boat once with his bare hands while pulling back on the waterski rope. At the end of the day, he would tell fantastic tales to his buddies that would paint tropical pictures in my little girl mind.
Back in 1956, he was released from the Fort Irwin Army Base in Barstow, California. He loved Southern California so much he stayed. Within a few months he met my makuahini and they were engaged to be married. As a wedding gift, she made him a hand-sewn Hawaiian shirt. It was fashioned out of tan hibiscus print fabric with red accents and popular, at the time, horizontal button holes with coconut brown bakelite buttons. That shirt started it all!
