Etsy Success: Your First Sale

You made a sale on Etsy, now what? This post will help you fulfill that first order smoothly, setting you up for a successful future!

Shipping Policies

Let’s take a step back. To keep customers from too much pacing and frustration, it’s important to manage their expectations. Your Shipping Polices, a subsection of your Shop Policies, let shoppers know when and how you ship the items in your shop. Writing clear, coherent policies that detail your shipping process can increase the confidence of a potential buyer. Let them know they can be on the lookout for an email when the item ships and whether or not it will include tracking information.

Payment

So you’ve made your first sale. When you sell an item, you are sent a sales notification email containing all the pertinent information for the sale (item, buyer, payment method, etc.). This notification is sent to the email address on file in Your Account > Settings. The transaction information will also show up in Your Shop > Sold Orders.

The first step is to make sure you have received payment. If your buyer has paid via PayPal, check your PayPal account. If you don’t see a payment, you may not have set up your PayPal account correctly. Here’s how to fix that.

Package It Up

As an Etsy buyer, I always look forward to receiving the mail. Creative packaging, handwritten thank you notes, and exceptional goods are just a few of the many reasons we wait in front of our mailboxes.

Tip: In your thank you note, request feedback from your buyer. Here’s one way to word this: “If you have any questions about this item feel free to email me. I would also be honored if you took a minute to give me feedback on Etsy!”

Communication Is Key

Don’t keep buyers guessing. By using the Shipping Notifications tool, you can keep an open line of communication with your customers. Let them know when you ship their package and provide tracking information if available. Notifying buyers of ship times will help set their expectations and reduce the amount of post-purchase convos.

Add a Note

Enter Shipping Notifications, a new tool you can use to notify buyers that a purchase is on its way.

Now, when you mark an order as shipped, you’ll see a button to add a Shipping Notification. The Shipping Notification, which includes a note to your buyer and tracking information, is an email that alerts your buyer that the item has shipped. If you add a USPS, FedEx, UPS, or DHL tracking number, we will also include a link to track the package at the the shipping provider’s website.

As part of the Shipping Notification launch, you can now add a note to your buyer. This little note provides some big opportunities. Consider the following:

  • Reward repeat purchases. Create and offer a coupon code to encourage buyers to come back for future purchases.
  • Ask for feedback. If you’d like to hear about the experience your buyer had, ask them to leave feedback when they receive the item.
  • Say thanks. One special aspect of buying on Etsy is the personal connection you have with each and every purchase. A simple thank you goes a long way, so don’t be afraid to say it.
  • Stay in touch. Advocate that your buyers stay in touch by following your shop activities through your newsletter, blog, Twitter or Facebook page.
  • Contact information. Let your buyer know how they should contact you if they have a question.

Finally, leave feedback for your buyer in Your Account > Feedback > Items Awaiting Feedback. Every single communication should build on the relationship that started when you made the sale. So I suggest letting your personality shine through when you leave feedback for your buyers.

    Etsy shipping thing sucks. Letting someone know the package is on the way is a given courtesy. I don't need Etsy button for that. Besides when you select the shipping feature from Paypal it does it automatically for you. What is really needed is to give the client the choice to select their shipping preference, similar to eBay. Perhaps, then Etsy can gloat on their functions???

    Oh dear... my message that I already send to my customers is too long for the space limitation in our new shipping notification tool. So guess I'll revert to how I was letting them know items shipped... telling them a gift is enclosed... how long the package will take to get there because of Customs processing... and hoping they will drop in again... and thanking them for their order.     TOO LIMITING!!! Just tried to use this new feature, and while I think it could be very beneficial, the limited character count for the note is WAY TO SHORT!!! Therefore, I will have to continue sending my shipping confirmation messages and tracking information through the Contact link as usual, and won't be using this new feature until the character count is increased. It's too bad really - it would be such a simple fix and improvement.

    The new idea is great but there are some problems with the new feature: 1. When I enter the tracking number for registered airmail that I sent from Israel to other countries, no matter if I sent it to USA or to Austria, the shipping method is always USPS which is not rellevant in many other cases. 2. There are many postage services to choose from, but Israeli Post Office is not one of them. There is a big Israeli community here on Etsy that has to deal with these problems... I'm sure it will be highly appreciated if these problems could be fixed. Thank you.

    please add a shipping calculator, paypal already sends email notifications of shipments on the way. but those who take checks and cash I am sure appreciate this feature, however without paypal couldn't even ship a package. even for my check paying customers I print it on line and they get a notification from USPS.com by putting in that one feature there for them as well. I don't waste my time going to the post office since I can't. my rural carrier picks everything up right out here, thank goodness for my post office. and so I must print on line and therefore my international shipping rates cannot reflect shipping that you get at the post office since its a 25 mile trip and not worth the extra fuel unless its a goodly chunk of change and it happens to be the day we go to town for the month. I include free shipping in my prices, but would much rather have a shipping calculator. what happens to the crawler "you might like" it disappeared on us and the newly listed is different and hard to manipulate also consider including the shipping calculator allows me to be doing other things and I can signify an item that would be free with purchase of one other item, if you can manage putting that into the works with your new billion dollar status it would help us all. I love to give things away for free with purchase of another item, but without shipping calculator and this option figured in, it takes a lot of time to refigure invoices and send them, etc. one more thing, don't hoodwink us.

    Love the concept, but love to see more room for text, 250 characters is just too too few. No confirmation, cc, or proof the message has been sent? When a customer asks when the item has shipped, even after receiving the notification (because they do), where is the proof (time, date stamp, copy) of the sent notification. Am I missing it? Or will I have to stick with the tried and true old Etsy convo email to have record it was sent?

    I guess it depends on how you ship as to whether this is a value add, or just redundant. I ship using UPS or USPS Priority Mail via Paypal, and those shipping options both include the ability to send an email shipping notice to the buyer. And, the tracking info is automatically included. 'nuf said.

    I love this tool it's a great idea, but I have to say that i think it won't be very useful because of the character limit. I always send convos + e-mail after shipping an order and I as much as I tried to shorten the message I just can't put it in 250 characters. You gave us some great tips about what we should include in that message but I'm sure that no one will be able to include everything you said in 250 characters. Please cancel the characters limit and make this tool far more useful. For now I will have to send convos + e-mail the old fashion way I'm afraid.

    This can be a great tool although, I also wish the character limit was longer. AND... I am not sure if the email was sent or not. After I clicked send, the message remained on the screen and it did not say "email sent." Clicked it twice for two seperated orders. I think I will send a convo also and apologize in case they have received multiple notifications. Etsy, is there a way to know if the email was sent????

    Ditto on "its a great feature" but the character limit is just NOT ENOUGH! I can barely say thank you, it's shipping today and when to expect the item in only 250 characters. Need to double the space at least! It looks unprofessional to shorten my typed words in order to fit more content too.

    We have to be careful about this because if you use Paypal they send a notification, if you also print from home using Usps, Stamps.com, or any other shipping service, they also send a notification, if we send another notification from Etsy that could be more of an annoyance to the buyer that it is good. I can see the use though if you do not use any of these and need a way to notify them. Please add other options for shipping like, "Priority mail" and "Next day shipping" to the item listing.

Paypal already sends out all my shipping notifications and I manually add the International ones later. I like this feature in case there are customers that don't really know there way around Paypal.

    I'd like to see a spot to fill in when (exact date) a package shipped. Right now it fills in only the date when you are updating this section. If it is after midnight or you forget to update this feature the buyer is getting inaccurate information.

    I love the shipping notification note, but I have a couple of suggestions: It is far too short, I think. I would like to show my Facebook page, a coupon code for a repeat order, and my blog, but I just can't fit everything and still say "thank you!" Allowing more characters would be very helpful. Also, bulk shipping notifications would be very helpful. On days where I ship many items, it's a little tedious to do it as it's currently set up.

    I agree with VintageHaven, we need to be able to enter the exact date when item was shipped, rather than defaulting to the date which we update it. My problem with the shipping notification as opposed to a convo is once the notification is sent we have no record of it. If I have written a personalised note to buyers I would like to keep track of this. I would like to see a button once shipping notification has been sent, to view the email which was sent. Then I would start using it for every order - I have used it on a couple orders but this put me off immediately.

    GREAT info here. I especially like the suggestion of using your Shipping Notification to let customers know how to stay in touch with you. I always include info about myFfacebook Page in the note I enclose in my customers' packages but it makes such good sense to include this in their emailed Shipping Notification as well! Much easier for a customer to just click on my facebook page when they're already sitting at their computer than to take my handwritten note from their package and GO to their computer to type in my Facebook page address. GENIUS! Thanks!

    I found it, so obvious too. I take I never realized to look right within the sold folder. I thought I had de-activated this feature and was looking where it was to activate it again ;- ) It's too bad we can't use it, we send a decently long thank you message with lots of info that would never fit in this features box. Our customers do use this information and the reason we provide it. Would love for an "unlimited" amount of characters like Etsy messages allow. If you want customers to learn Etsy, you have to give them the links in your shop, as well as giving them previewing info on what is to come in your shop, so, they keep coming back. We have a large following and we feel it is partially due to educating them
