I have been wanting to try my hand at enameling. I have been trying to read up on the subject and learn as much as I can. I have noticed that many authors mention the use of Klyr-Fire prior to applying the enamels themselves. Then others make no mention of it at all. I was just wondering if any of the enamelists out there could tell me if it is absolutely necessary or as long as my metal is really clean can I place the enamel directly on the raw metal. Thanks in advance.

It has been a while since i have done enameling, I am no expert. But from what I recall, It will help hold the enamel onto non-horizontal surfaces, so you really only need the klyr-fire if you are doing something that is not flat.

Thank you so much maggiejs. I just wasnt sure if it was required in order to get the enamel to actually adhere to the metals surface. I really appreciate your response

You do not need Klyrfire or any other adhesive.... but it will make it easier to enamel. You can sift dry. You can also use water. The glue makes it less likely the enamel will move when putting the piece into the kiln.

I don't think it's absolutely necessary to adhere the enamel to your metal before you fire it. I like to use it because I like to be precise in the placement, but if you are more flexible about it then you should be fine!

You can also use hairspray...buy the pump spray, any brand should work. You can also paint it on with a brush. Since it is alcohol based, you do not need to wait for it to dry before firing, as you do with klyrfire.
