Ah, I'm feeling better and better about pulling items out of my etse shop and putting them in local art shows and galleries where they actually are seen and sell.

i think this is a slippery slope. though i think that it sounds like sour grapes to immediately gang up on crafters whose aesthetic may be "trendy" or who are generally more favored by etsy, i also think that continuing to foster what is trendy while letting other items slip under the radar is going to make etsy an over-arching brand in a way. rather than being a venue to sell our goods, it will become more of a general style or aesthetic. certain kinds of crafts will be "etsy-esque" and though that's great for the folks who make that stuff (and for etsy!) it's also quite limiting and will make what could be a really amazing, sustainable project/website into a flash in the plan. does that make ANY sense at all?

so, yes: make what you love, but if you happen to love something that sells more than other things you make, there's nothing wrong with being business-savvy and satisfying a demand!

What pple purchase is extremely trend oriented. Etsy doesn't exist in a vacuum -- those trends will show up on Etsy as well.

Gift guides DO NOT drive the trends ... Etsy and their gift guides are small potatoes in the fashion industry.

Less paranoia please.

I understand what you're trying to say, firelily, but not everyone makes purchases based on trends. I don't, and neither do most of my friends.

We like unique, quality handcrafted goods.

Why are these stats such a big secret? Hmm...

well i only read to page two, but im guessing that once they release stats etsy will be flooded with scrabble tile pendants. oh wait...we all love those! no really, whatever is selling well will start to be made just to sell well. theres a lot of people making things that "just sell" rather than "just waht they WANT to make" because they need to make a living. Im not excited about that idea at all, but its the truth. also, i find MYSELF making a range of items in my shop, because i find that helps sell the other things in my shop. if i could just make lavender sachets all day i would, but i cant- i need variety. soooo, what im sayin is that in the end, these stats will be both helpful and harmful.

oh, and to cover my ass, i started here on etsy selling square glass pendants (sold a bazillion of them) and i loved it, so im not knocking the scrabblers.

I totally agree, Popko, but I fear that they'll be more harmful, as people will scramble to make "what sells" rather than listening to their creative muses.

This was the part i found interesting:

We've begun closely tracking trends and paying attention to what shoppers are searching and buying on Etsy.

...
Yup they all know what the most searched keywords are.
wouldn't you like to know what they are?
hmmmmmmm
